CicakMan: An Honest Review…

Monday 11th of December 2006

If you have looked at the papers, in movie section, you surely have read the reviews about CicakMan. They start by appraising the CGI, and then continue on talking a bit about the characters, and then more on the background, and then that’s it. Notice that they didn’t even touch about the storyline. It’s almost the same for every other newspaper reviews. The reason they didn’t talk a lot about the storyline is because there’s nothing to be proud of. The storyline is, I think (NOTE: I think), is not very good.
First of all, okay, the storyline was all right, but the actors are all just average. I feel that they ultimately fail to deliver the emotions to the audience. Apek especially, since his jokes are all about spontaneous-kind-of-joke, only effective on the first portion of the movie, and then the rest, it just ‘dies’. I don’t know, try to see it for yourself, you’ll see what I mean. And Fasha Sandha is the perfect example of bad casting. Or maybe bad acting. Or maybe bad scripting. Or maybe all three of them.
And don’t get me started with Aznil, as the main villain of the story. He just ‘fail’, that’s the only word I can say. Same goes with A.C and Adlin. I found them irritating like hell. Especially Aznil. He will not be the villain to be remembered.
The one thing that impressed me a lot is the CGI, settings and backgrounds. They did tremendously well. Why can’t they think of a storyline as good as the CGI?!!
Anyway, while I was watching the movie, I actually noticed a row of Chinese audience. At first, I couldn’t believe it, but hey it is a multi rational country after all. But, when I noticed them unimpressed by any of Apek’s one-liner jokes, I feel a bit.. well, it is a mix emotion. Still, I didn’t give up hope. I was convinced they will like the movie by the time we get to the ending. But, as I watched the movie, I felt like this is getting boring. As soon as Aznil appears for the first time, I think that does it. Aznil totally blew the movie all together. As I ultimately fear of, those Chinese left the cinema even though we barely get to the half of the show. Well , I have to say maybe they didn’t understand all of Apek’s jokes. It is the kind of jokes maybe that only the Malays can appreciate, and understand. Or maybe it’s because of Aznil. We will never know.
But yet, the movie actually managed to grab an American women to watch through the whole movie (I think she’s American). Yes, an American was in the cinema together with me. I don’t know why, but it did. It was a proud moment… Hmm yeah I can say that…
All and all, it is still a good foundation for the CGI to start play a role in Malaysian movies. This is the only part they did not have to improve any further. But, if they want, then it’s great! It is all ready great as it is, I can only think of better effects for the movies to come.

Kid’s Rating (over 100%):
Great Suit = +10
Bad and Ugly Mask = -30
CGI = +98
Storyline = -90
Aznil+Apek+A.C+Adlin = -100
Sick Jokes = -40
Unable to catch Chinese audience = -99
Able to catch an American viewer = + 80

Overall = 30% or 3/10 (Because of Aznil. Darn!! How I hate his character!)
Punca = Aznil

p.s : BTW, I hate Mid’s Zon H parking lot.

p.p.s : Don’t you think the title should really be CicakMan:My ‘Personal’ Review instead?
